Lumotext's free voices are the ones your device has. The list in the voice picker is whatever your browser or phone reports, so when a voice you downloaded is missing, the fix is on the device, not in Lumotext.
Download Premium voices where you can. They sound the most natural by a distance, and they are free. Enhanced is the next best. In the browser, Lumotext lists Premium, Enhanced and Google voices only; the basic voices your computer ships with are left out.
Mac (Chrome)
A voice downloaded in System Settings doesn't reach Chrome until you sign out and back in, or restart the Mac. Chrome reads the list once, so after that, quit Chrome (Cmd+Q) and open it again.
To add a voice: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System Voice → Manage Voices. Choose a language and download a Premium voice (or Enhanced, if there is no Premium one for that language). Apple's guide: Change the voice your Mac uses to speak text.
Windows (Chrome, Edge)
Voices come from Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices. Restart the browser after a download. Microsoft's guide: Download a language pack for speech. Edge also offers its own Natural voices, which Lumotext lists when you use Edge.
iPhone and iPad
The Lumotext app lists voices from Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices (Spoken Content on iOS 18). Choose the language, download a Premium voice (or Enhanced), and reopen Lumotext. Apple's guide: Hear iPhone speak the screen. Siri voices aren't offered to apps.
Reading in another language
A free voice reads in its own language. On a page in another language, Lumotext translates each sentence first, on your device, in Chrome 138 and later and in the iPhone app. In Safari and Firefox the sentence is read as written. AI voices, with Lumotext Pro, read any language in every browser.
