Comparison · local vs hosted

A NaturalReader alternative with no quota to run out of

Documents read aloud with the words highlighted, free and unmetered, because the speech comes from the voices already on your computer rather than being rented from a server.

No account needed to start. Reading happens on your device.

The difference that matters

Local speech changes the economics.

Hosted readers meter you because every minute of audio costs them money to produce. That is where daily character limits and the gap between free and premium voices come from. Lumotext takes the other route: your operating system already has good speech voices installed, and the browser can drive them directly, so reading with them is free and there is nothing to count.

It also changes what happens to your words. A hosted reader has to receive the text before it can speak it; a local voice does not. With Lumotext the PDF is opened in your browser, the text is extracted there, and the audio is produced on your machine, so a contract, a medical letter or an unpublished manuscript is not handed to anyone to be spoken.

What you give up is the top of the voice range: the largest neural voices only exist in the cloud. Lumotext Pro offers six AI voices for that, and if one particular hosted voice is what you love, stay where you are. If what you actually wanted was a good reader that does not meter you, start with the reader, or see how it handles PDFs and EPUBs.

FAQ

Common questions about switching.

Is there really no character limit?

Not with the voices on your device. Nothing is being rendered on a server, so there is no daily quota and no cost per thousand characters; a whole book costs nothing to read. Pro’s AI voices are the one metered part, because those are rendered in the cloud.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The reader runs at lumotext.com/app in a desktop browser, signed out if you like. If you would rather have the voice read the page you are already on, the free Chrome extension does that.

Can I get better voices?

Yes, and for free: download the enhanced or premium voices in macOS System Settings, or the natural voices in Windows Settings, and they appear in the picker immediately. This guide shows where they are.

Does it handle scanned documents?

Only if the PDF has a text layer. There is no optical character recognition yet, so an image-only scan cannot be read.

What happens to my documents?

Signed out, they stay in your browser. With a free account you can save documents to a synced library, and the privacy policy spells out exactly what is stored and where.
